Are You Metabolically Inflexible?

This Wiki quote on the effects of exercise got me thinking, “Physical exercise has been shown to benefit a wide range of  mammals, as well as salmon, crocodiles and one species of bird. However, several studies have shown that lizards display no benefit from exercise, leading them to be termed “metabolically inflexible” “.

Exercise stimulates many kinds of hormone production- well it does if you’re not a reptile, these hormones include serotonin and endorphins as being the main precursors for maintaining a sense of positive self worth and feeling healthily connected; just what we all need as the depths of winter purges our body of vitamins and minerals.

Vigorous exercise performed several times a week will decrease your cortisol levels, cortisol is the fight or flight stress hormone that increases blood pressure.

A regular exercise programme will strengthen muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons. Your routine should include replicating natural body movement patterns as you push, pull, squat, lunge and rotate your physicality through the various planes of action. Creating a ‘functional’ training routine strengthens the body’s organic movement patterns and thus reduces postural aches from our daily stance.

Metabolic rates vary from person to person as our genetics are the key to so many physiological traits, and yet, a body that maintains a high percentage of lean muscle mass will operate at a higher metabolic level. Lean muscle mass is active tissue. As you work at your desk or casually walk around during the day a body with a high level of lean muscle mass will burn more calories at rest. An individual with a higher body-fat to lean muscle ratio will metabolise foods and hormones at a much slower rate. Body-fat is inactive.

Create a healthy lifestyle and body with the ‘metabolic flexibility’ of a strength trained yogi, you will feel fantastic throughout the winter months and perhaps be firm competition if ever found in a crocodile wrestle.
